Most DAM shortlists start from analyst lists or from the three or four vendors that dominate search results. Together they cover a small part of the 462 products on the market, so a team of ten and a global brand often end up comparing the same names even though they need different products.
This article helps you build a shortlist that fits your situation. It sorts the market by team size, budget and need, tells you which products to look at first in each case, and says when a large vendor is still the right pick. Freedam is one of the options, and it is a poor fit in some of the cases below.
As of 2026-10-19, the right shortlist depends on five things: team size, budget, where the data must live, whether video or product data dominate, and who will administer the system. For a team with a few admins, the products to look at cost USD 25 to 1,000 a month, and some of them do not limit the number of viewers. For marketing teams of 20 to 150 users, contracts run USD 15,000 to 150,000 a year. Enterprise suites start around USD 40,000 a year.
How do I choose a DAM by team size and budget?#
Start from the segment, then narrow by need.
| Segment | Typical buyers | Products in this segment | Price band seen |

| SMB (small and medium-sized business) and small teams | Small teams with a few admins; some products, such as Freedam and Dash, also allow unlimited viewers | Freedam, Dash, Pics.io, Filecamp, pixx.io, Air, Kontainer, Daminion | USD 25 to 1,000 a month |
| Mid-market DAM | Marketing teams of 20 to 150 users | Brandfolder, MediaValet, Frontify, CELUM, Fotoware | USD 15,000 to 150,000 a year |
| Enterprise suites | Global brands, regulated industries | Adobe AEM Assets, OpenText, Sitecore Content Hub, Aprimo, Acquia DAM, Orange Logic, Hyland (Nuxeo), Bynder, Canto | USD 40,000 to 500,000 or more a year |
| Brand portals | Agencies, franchises, partners | Frontify, Brandpad, Brandkit, Papirfly, Brandworkz, IntelligenceBank, Freedam (brand center) | Varies |
| Video MAM (media asset management) | Media, sports, production | iconik, Frame.io, MediaSilo, Wiredrive, Imagen, Dalet Flex, ScorePlay | Usage-based |

Which type of buyer are you?#
Use this table as a first filter. Each row names the first thing to test, not a verdict.
| If this is true | Look first at | Because |
|---|---|---|
| A few admins and any number of viewers, and you want to see a price before talking to sales | Freedam, Dash, Pics.io, Filecamp, pixx.io, Air | Published prices from USD 25 to 1,000 a month, no sales cycle |
| 20 to 150 users, budget of USD 15,000 or more a year | Brandfolder, MediaValet, CELUM, Fotoware | Built for approval workflows, integrations and many user roles |
| Global brand, regulated industry, analyst recognition required | Adobe, OpenText, Sitecore, Aprimo, Acquia, Bynder, Canto | Governance, scale and procurement familiarity |
| Agencies, franchisees or dealers need approved files and guidelines | Frontify, Papirfly, Brandpad, Brandworkz, Freedam | Guidelines and approved downloads are the main use |
| Video is most of the library | iconik, Frame.io, MediaSilo, Imagen, Dalet Flex | Review, proxy and archive workflow |
| Assets must link to product records | Pimcore, 4ALLPORTAL, Kontainer, Plytix | The image and the product record are managed together |
| Data must stay on servers you control | ResourceSpace, Phrasea, AtroDAM, Freedam (self-hosted) | You run the system and decide where data lives |
| Engineers consume assets through an API (application programming interface) | Cloudinary, ImageKit, Filerobot, Uploadcare | Transformations and delivery are built in |
Should you set up the DAM yourself or work with an integrator?#
How a DAM is set up matters as much as its price. Large and mid-size DAMs are connected to many other systems, such as PIM (product information management), CMS (content management system), ERP (enterprise resource planning) and single sign-on, and they need agreed governance: who can see, edit and publish what, and which metadata every asset carries. That work is a project, usually led by the vendor's services team or an implementation partner. Smaller products are built so that you can set them up yourself.
| Self-service | Integrator-led | |
|---|---|---|
| Who does the setup | You, with the vendor's support team | The vendor's services team or an implementation partner, with your IT and brand teams |
| Typical products | Freedam, Dash, Pics.io, Filecamp, pixx.io, Air | Adobe AEM Assets, OpenText, Sitecore Content Hub, Aprimo, Acquia DAM, Orange Logic, and the mid-size products when they are connected to several systems |
| Time to go live | As fast as you can upload and organize your files | 3 to 6 months for a full rollout (Aprimo); 4 to 9 months for 500 or more users (Canto). Both are vendor estimates |
| Cost beyond the license | Little: no implementation project | Services estimated at USD 10,000 to 50,000 (Bynder) and onboarding at USD 2,000 to 10,000 (Brandfolder). For Adobe Experience Manager, a consultancy reports implementation costing twice the annual license or more |
| Governance | Set up by you: roles, metadata and sharing rules | Defined before go-live. Canto says revisiting governance mid-project is one of the most common causes of delay |
| What you need in-house | One owner who knows the content | A project team, an IT contact and sign-off from several departments. Canto advises adding 30 to 50% to estimates if the project runs alongside regular work |
| Fits | Teams that want to start now and run the system themselves | Organizations with many regions, systems and approvals, or that prefer to deal only with an integrator |
Before you choose, ask each vendor: who does the setup and what does it cost, whether it has certified partners, how fast support answers, what must be ready on day one (roles, metadata, folder structure), and who owns governance after go-live.
What are alternatives to Bynder, Brandfolder or Canto?#
These three are products with quote-only pricing. Which alternative fits depends on what you want to change.
| What you want to change | Look at |
|---|---|
| A lower price, with fewer workflow features | Freedam, Dash, Pics.io, Filecamp, pixx.io |
| Published prices instead of a quote | Freedam, Dash, Pics.io, Cloudinary, Air, pixx.io, ResourceSpace |
| A European vendor | CELUM, Fotoware, Kontainer, pixx.io, Filecamp (see European DAM vendors) |
| A different kind of owner | Check who owns each candidate (see who owns which DAM) |
| The same depth of workflow and governance | Other products with similar depth: Canto, Brandfolder, Bynder, MediaValet, CELUM, Fotoware |
When the large vendor is the better choice: if you have hundreds of users, regional teams needing granular permissions, multi-step approval chains and a vendor on your procurement list, a mid-market or enterprise product is the right tool. Small-team plans are not built for that.
Which alternatives suit a team of five?#
Teams with a few admins are served by products whose price depends on the plan or the number of admins, not on every viewer, so a brand with thousands of viewers can stay on a small-team plan.
| Product | Entry price a month | Highest price a month | How it is priced |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freedam (publisher) | Free; EUR 129 (Team) | EUR 549 (Business) | Per admin; viewers and guests unlimited |
| Dash | GBP 79 | GBP 449 | Flat tiers; all features and unlimited users |
| Pics.io | USD 100 | USD 800 | By plan; AI add-on from USD 50 |
| Filecamp | USD 29 | USD 89 | By plan |
| pixx.io | EUR 20 per admin | EUR 80 per admin | Per admin; annual payment |
| Air | Free; USD 25 | USD 900 | Credits |
Which are the best brand portals and video DAMs?#
For brand portals, the products named by analysts and vendors are Frontify (modular, seat-based pricing, with a Vendr median of USD 37,517 a year), Papirfly, Brandpad, Brandworkz and IntelligenceBank. A DAM with a brand center is enough when guidelines are a small part of the work: Freedam includes one, so guidelines and approved downloads sit in the same system as the library. A dedicated portal is better when many outside partners use guidelines daily.
For video, iconik, Frame.io, MediaSilo and Wiredrive are built around review and approval. A general DAM can store video; check in a trial whether it covers review comments, large-file transfer and archive handling at your volume.
Which open source and self-hosted DAMs exist?#
The dataset lists 23 open source DAM products, including ResourceSpace (UK, paid hosting and support, data hosted in the UK), Phraseanet / Phrasea (France), AtroDAM (Germany), Piwigo (France), TACTIC and Razuna. No license fee means you pay in staff time: updates, backups, security patches and monitoring. Freedam can also be self-hosted, with a commercial licence of EUR 9,000 a year per deployment (see the self-hosted DAM guide), which suits a team that wants vendor support and its own servers.
Open source is the right answer when your IT team already runs servers and wants to read the code. It is the wrong answer when no one has time to run it.
What should I check before choosing any alternative?#
- Price for your real scenario. Count admins, viewers, storage and AI use against each vendor's model, as in the pricing article.
- Export. Ask how assets, metadata, folder paths and rights dates leave the system.
- Owner and direction. Check who owns the vendor.
- Where data is hosted and where AI runs (European DAM vendors).
- A trial with your own files, not the vendor's demo library.

To test the small-team route, Freedam's free plan and 30-day trial of the Team plan need no credit card.
Frequently asked questions#
The published-price products: Freedam (a free plan, then from EUR 129 a month), Filecamp from USD 29 a month, Air from USD 25 a month, pixx.io from EUR 20 per admin a month, Pics.io from USD 100 a month and Dash from GBP 79 a month. Each has fewer workflow and governance features than a mid-market contract.
Yes. Freedam, Dash, Pics.io, Cloudinary, Air, Filecamp, pixx.io and ResourceSpace publish prices. Bynder, Canto, Brandfolder, Aprimo, MediaValet and Acquia DAM do not.
When you need enterprise governance, many roles, a partner network, deep PIM or CMS integration, or a vendor that your procurement already approves. The cost is higher and justified by those needs.
There is no single best. Test two or three published-price products with your own files and compare admin limits, storage and AI costs. Freedam is one of them; so are Dash, Pics.io, Filecamp and pixx.io.
If you can run servers, yes. ResourceSpace, Phrasea and AtroDAM have no license fee. You need someone to own updates and backups.
Not for a small team. Self-service products such as Freedam, Dash, Pics.io, Filecamp and pixx.io are set up by the buyer. Large and mid-size DAMs that connect to PIM, CMS, ERP and single sign-on usually need an implementation project of several months, run by the vendor or a partner.
