Every kilowatt-hour the platform draws comes from renewable sources, wind, hydro, and solar, purchased on long-term contracts directly with the data centers we run on.

Free cooling, not chillers

Our data centers sit in cool northern European climates and use outside air for the bulk of the year. That means less compressor cooling, less wasted electricity, and a lower PUE than the industry average.

ISO 50001 energy management

The facilities behind Freedam are certified to ISO 50001, the international standard for continuous energy-efficiency improvement. Independent audits, not marketing claims.

Heat reuse where possible

Server waste heat is recovered and fed into local district-heating networks where the infrastructure exists, turning a byproduct into a resource for the surrounding community.

Numbers in human units

“217 kg CO₂” means nothing to most people. The same figure as kilowatt-hours, trees, or kilometres travelled lands instantly, in a stand-up, in a CSR report, or on a quarterly slide.

Every original we keep is paired with a handful of derivatives so the gallery, hero images, cards, and thumbnails all open in milliseconds. The dashboard breaks the total down by tier, so you can spot the moment a derivative tier is bigger than it should be, and shrink it.

Tip: most Freedam workspaces find their biggest CO₂ wins by re-encoding originals into modern formats (WebP, AVIF) and trimming a tier nobody actually loads.

Orphan detection

The cheapest CO₂ is the byte you never store

Most digital libraries quietly accrete files nobody opens any more, the offcuts of a shoot, abandoned drafts, the rejected variants from a campaign that shipped. Freedam runs a weekly sweep that finds them.

Older than 180 days

Default cut-off is six months, configurable per workspace down to a tighter window if you want to be stricter.

No views, no downloads, no shares

Across the same window. Activity from the analytics log AND any started download counts, not just completed ones.

Not part of any collection

If someone bothered to put the asset in a working set, a campaign folder, or a brand kit, it stays.

Not soft-deleted

Already-trashed assets are excluded, they are on a different timer in the regular trash flow.

The cleanup workflow

    Weekly automatic sweep

    A scheduled job tagged assets:detect-orphans runs once a week per workspace, snapshotting the orphan report into a dated table. No human action required.

  2. 02

    Admin review screen

    Permitted admins land on a sortable table, by size or by days since last activity, search by filename, ID, or title, and check a candidate before deciding.

  3. 03

    Bulk delete with audit trail

    Selected orphans go to soft-delete (the regular trash) so nothing is unrecoverable for 30 days. Every deletion is logged, with the reason and the policy version that allowed it.

  4. 04

    CSV export for evidence

    Export the report for the date you cleaned up, a row per asset, with size and inactivity window, to attach to a CSR report, a quarterly review, or an internal change record.

The math, in the open

Honest about the assumptions

Carbon estimates for digital workloads are inherently approximate. We picked conservative public reference factors, documented them, and let your team override them when they have better data.

Stored: ~0.02 kg CO₂e per GB · year

Covers data-center operation plus a share of embodied hardware. Round figure derived from the Shift Project (2019) and IEA (2022) baselines, deliberately rounded down.

Transferred: ~0.6 g CO₂e per GB

Covers network plus device rendering. Same source basis. Conservative, public estimates range from 0.3 g to 8 g; we picked the lower end.

Configurable per workspace

If your sustainability team has its own factors, tighter, location-specific, or audited internally, overrides drop into the settings table and feed straight into the dashboard.

Formula in the open

storage_kg = GB × factor × (window_days / 365). transfer_kg = GB × factor. No black box, no proprietary scoring, the math is the math, on display in the docs.

The same numbers serve both audiences. CSR gets evidence; marketing gets a story. Neither has to wait for an annual consulting engagement to produce them.

Quarterly ESG slide

Pull total kg CO₂ stored and transferred for the period, plus the equivalent in trees-absorbed-for-a-year. The number is the same number every employee sees, so nobody can argue with it.

A clean-up KPI

Make orphan reduction a measurable goal. Reclaimed GB and the CO₂ saved per year are surfaced directly in the cleanup screen, a simple win for a CSR scorecard.

Storage tier hygiene

See which rendition tiers carry the most weight. Trim derivatives you do not actually need, or downsize masters that came in larger than necessary, and the trend line shows it next week.

Evidence for a regulator or auditor

CSV exports from the orphan cleanup screen pair with the audit log for every deletion, the kind of trail an internal CSR audit, or a CSRD-aligned report, can actually rest on.
