Receiving a Share

Someone has sent you a link to files stored in Freedam. You don't need an account or any software: the link opens in your web browser. This page explains what you can do there.

Click the link in the email or message you received.

  • If the content opens right away, the share is public. Skip to Browse the shared files.
  • If you see "Authentication Required", the share is protected. Click Access Protected Content, or Sign In at the top right.

In the Access Required dialog, enter what the share asks for, then click Access Content:

The dialog asks for What to enter
Email Address The address the sender shared with, usually the one the invitation email was sent to. Capitalisation does not matter.
Password The password the sender gave you. Freedam never emails it: ask the sender if you don't have it.

Once you are in, this browser remembers your access to the share for 24 hours.

After 5 wrong attempts, the share stops accepting new attempts for 5 minutes. Wait, then try again with the right details.

Browse the shared files

The top of the page tells you who shared what, for example "Alex Martin shared Spring Campaign with you". Small labels below show when the share opens or expires, whether files are watermarked, and the download quality.

  • Folders: when a whole collection was shared, the Folders list on the left shows its sub-folders. Click one to see its files. The breadcrumb above the files shows where you are.
  • Views: switch between List and small, medium or large grid views with the buttons above the files.
  • Search: type in Search assets... to filter by file name, title or description. Click Clear Search to see everything again.
  • Preview: click a file to open it full screen. Videos play in the browser, with subtitles when they have them.

Download files

You can only download when the sender allowed it. If there are no download buttons or checkboxes, the share is view only.

One file: use the Download action on the file.

Several files:

  1. Tick the checkbox on each file you want.
  2. Click Download [N] Assets in the bar that appears.
  3. Choose a size. You can pick the quality the sender allowed, or any smaller size. Each option shows its maximum length in pixels.
  4. Click Download ZIP. The ZIP is built and starts downloading straight away.

Everything in the share: click Download All above the files. You get one ZIP, with folders kept as they are in the share.

A whole folder: open the folder and click Download folder.

Some files may carry usage rights. When they do, the download dialog summarises them: read them before using the files.

Watermarked shares

When the share is marked Watermarked, downloaded images carry the sender's watermark. Videos, audio files and PDFs cannot be previewed or downloaded from a watermarked share. Ask the sender for another link if you need them.

Embed a video

On a video, choose Copy embed code to copy an HTML snippet you can paste into a web page or content management system. Embedding only works for videos, and only for public shares: videos from password-protected or email-restricted shares cannot play inside another website.

Contact the sender

A Contact [sender] button appears at the bottom of the page. On a protected share it is there before you enter a password or email address, so you can ask the sender for access.

  1. Click it and fill in Your name, Your email and Your message.
  2. Click Send message.

The sender receives your message by email, with your address set as the reply address, so they can answer you directly.

Report an issue, also at the bottom of the page, is for technical problems with the page itself. It sends a report to Freedam, the software provider, not to the sender, and includes a screenshot of the page and its address. For questions about the files, use Contact [sender] instead.

Emails about the share

If the sender gave access to your email address, Freedam may email you about the share:

  • a reminder about a day before the link expires,
  • a notice when the sender changes the dates, the download options, the watermark or the password,
  • a notice when the sender revokes your access.

If the sender only allowed your company domain, you won't get these emails.
